Just got a 99 A4 1.8t Questions
Hey guys, just got as a family car a 1999 A4 1.8t. Couple of questions.
The radio is stuck on safe, tried the steps on the manual, but still will not clear, I have the code and serial # but cant get it to work, any ideas?
Also where should the temp on the car sit at? Its always right next to C.
When I turn on the fogs will this also turn on my rear lights? (Blinkers?)
I was told that the timing belt was changed, but they dont have records of it, how can I tell if they did change it or not?
Here is a pic, Ill have to wax and get a fender for it,

If you have the radio code and the serial # and it still isn't workin, you're gonna have to take it to a dealer and have them do it ($$$). Are you sure you're entering the numbers in the right manner?
After a few minutes the engine temp should be smack in the middle of the gauge, needle pointing straight up. Sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor. Any check engine lights? Welcome to the club!

hmm looks like buyer "forgot" to tell me that.... I wounder what else he forgot to tell me....lol
I called local Audi dealer and said it will be $29 to get the code, but I need to fax info to them.

My temp gauge only stuck straight up on hot days with the AC running, mine is usually around the quarter mark...
Also, from the look of it, you have a 99.5, same as me, and I didn't even know it for a few months myself. From what I understand, it's a very desirable half year to have...
Actually, your car looks exactly like mine, same color, same wheels, the whole nine.
You should have two fog light buttons, one for the front, and one for the rear "fog lights" but I don't think the front fog lights will come on unless the headlights are on, unless the previous owner tweaked it.
If they took it to a shop to get changed, they may have written the date and/or mileage somewhere near the front of the engine, so look for that, otherwise, there is a thread in here somewhere that explains a simple way of checking if you're getting close to needing a new one.
Like CCA4 said, welcome to the club, there is a world of info in here to help you along your way like it has helped me...

If your temp gauge is acting funny as stated above, the Engine coolant temp sensor is always the best place to start. They are a cheap part (I've found them for $15-$26) and good to replace anyways, since they are know to make these 1.8T's do some weird things. There should be a write up on it, its very easy, it takes under 5 minutes and you can do it without draining the coolant.
there is no way to tell that a timing belt has been replaced or not without reciepts. if you dont know for sure i would just suck it up and do it again. its not worth having the previous owner lie to you and have it break. you would be stuck with the several thousand dollar repair bill, not him.
the radio code is very simple lol.. i did mine (original delta cc radio book still in car) u just hold down 2 buttons for about 5 seconds and then input the code... then press those same buttons again and it enters the code

lol
