Default is a k04 worth it?

have a 2001 1.8 and am wondering if the step up to a k04 is worth the coin. by no means i am considering doing it anytime soon. would have to wait till next summer as the funds are quite low. just wondering what the hp gain is, 0-60 times, and possible side efects, i.e. more problems with the car. factors to consider are i am pretty good with cars but this is my first audi, would definately need to keep the cost around 3, and just how much work is it? i also want to keep the car stock looking ( i understand exhaust is almost a must with that turbo). what kind of remapping needs to be done to benefit from the new turbo? i already looked at all the threads i could find about it so please dont forward me unless there is one that goes into specific detail about the k04 because i havent found a thread that outlines the installation yet.

this topic is more than covered to death. Please read the newbie guides.

Basically the ko4 is only rated a wopping 5bhp over your current ko3s and will only give you a mild 10-15whp spike that last all of 300-400rpms longer. If your going to drop $2k or more on something, save up longer and actually get something that has a power band

here's some info:
http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shar...rain&IL=AWEK04

there is a standard K04 program offered by GIAC....it'll bump you to 235hp/265tq...

to run a ko4 you will need exhaust(~$350(custom)), a ko4 turbo(with gasket kit)(g-pop shop($780)), a new fpr($60), and a tune(standard giac ko4($350))

so you are roughly looking at about $1540

and install will take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on experience....

and there is also a Hammer file available for your car through GIAC...which will have similar #'s to the PC-16....247hp/295tq

and for this file you will need everything listed above, plus a FMIC (eBay secial(190), injectors (~$200)

so an additional $390 for an extra 12hp/30tq

other boltons that will increase performance are a hfc(labree, techtonics, tantrumwerks), a hf mani(034), intake/custom heatshield, water/meth inj., ebc/mbc, ported intake manifold, silicone TIP

hopefully something in there answered your questions...

if you just want to go KO4, it'll cost you ~$1500 for parts and then roughly 6 hours to install....

well, gl!

For a quick refernce, here's the link CincyTT was referring to:

Scroll down for the turbo comparisons.

yeah thats exactly one of those threads that i have read a few times over. it does cover the k04, but i am looking for a little more detail. i like the link quattroa4 posted, it seems like a worth while package, but i am still a little hazy as to how well the car will take to a different turbo. ive seen the hp and torque figuers, but is there anyone out there who has a k04 and can provide testimony?

More than enough people have gone K04. It's not worth it IMO. For a few more hondo's you can get a gtrs kit. The K04 has a harsh torque spike, which is the most powerful thing about it, and the most malignant as a few engines have granaded. I don't think an exhaust is necessary for a K04 set up. The most restrictive part of the exhaust is the cat so just get a 2.5 DP. This is exactly why tuners need to put a 1+ tune for the B5's, almost the same power for way less $

yea torque is what snaps connecting rods, and smaller turbos have large torque spikes. the stock k03 is small enough that the spike is not very powerful. if you slightly increase the size, the spike gets much bigger. however with big turbos the boost comes on much more smoothly and its much easier on the engine.

i origionaly wanted to put a ko4 in my car when i first started lookin for mods, but it really only gives you 20 hp over a chip would. then when you break down the cost its like this...

stock turbo + chip = $300
you get +50hp/+50 tq on average, thats $6 per horsepower

a new k04 is $750, plus tuning $300, injectors $200, boost controler $75 = $1325
over stock setup you may be looking at +75hp/+75tq
thats almost $18 per horsepower

if you compare that over a Ko3+chip
$1325-$300(just the chip)=$1025
so for 25 additional HP over just a chip, it costs $1025, or $41 per horsepower.

a KO4 is a good mod to get you used to working more in depth on your car, if you get one for cheap or have an extra $1000 laying around, but if your going for cost effective power, this is not the turbo to use.

keep in mind im not looking to go all out here. from what i understand the bigger the turbo, the more mods the enigne needs. i dont want to be pushing 300 horse or anything like that. i just want a nice amount of extra kick but most importantly a reliable machine as well. plus when i pull up to a stoplight i want the guy next to me thinking i got a full on stock a4 but there actually is something underneath there. is a k04 a good choice or should i stick with a chip? i mean if nobody was buying a k04 kit, they wouldnt even have one put together

since you have an 01, stick with the chip.

if you had a 97-00 then it would be more worth it for sure.

your car is as reliable as you make it. if you put half *** ebay parts in there, expect crappy results. if you really take care of your car, pay attention to the little things (when your CEL comes on, figure out why immediately, dont drive around for a week before you get to it, for instance).

if you do these things an elim setup, or even full gt28rs is a good upgrade. you will have to spend a bit more then you would a KO4 but your $ per hp will be way lower. a gtrs or elim 28rs will sit you at about 280hp which is a nice little kick you are looking for. you can expect about 70hp over a KO4.

as long as you set it up right the first time, and take your time getting it running correctly, theres no reason you will have any more problems then you would with a stock setup.

heres a cost workup for a gtrs elim...
$1600 for turbo kit
$500 front mount intercooler, you really need this if going anything bigger then a k04
$450 fueling and software.
=$2255
your looking at about 120hp over stock, thats about $21 per horsepower.
if you go this route, you should consider an exhaust system, although not completely necessary you will get some extra power if you do.

so it may seem like more money outright, but you get more power for your money this way.
