Default Which Key Fob Do I Need?

Hey guys, quick question. I've done some searching on here but was unable to find a definite answer. I bought my 2000 A4 FWD 1.8t with no keyless remote, just a key. I want to make sure and buy the right fob, how do i figure out with one i need? As i understand it there are several part numbers. Also, how do I tell if I need a 2 or 3 button remote? Would both work? Thanks guys!

I am actually going through the same thing- I called up the parts department at the Audi dealership, gave them my VIN and asked them for the part number.

The 3 button is 4D0-837-231-P-01C for 69.01 dollars. The 2 button is the same price and the part number is 4D0-837-231-T-01C. I do not know if using the 3 button will allow the trunk release to operate or not. I wonder if a vagcom can enable that, has anybody done that? What we sell here are the switchblade blanks and we cut that from the key the owner uses to start the car. That key blank is 30.95 dollars and also in stock. It also has the immobilizer chip in it. This pertains to some late model year 2000 S4’s and all 2001 to 2005 A4 cars, but in order for the key to start the car it would have to be cut and then programmed to the car. That is an extra charge you'd have to pay at your local dealer or shop.

Due to security issues, we can't order a key by VIN number and ship it. Keys are purchased in person, face to face. But we can sell the remotes by themselves should that go bad. We can also sell the switchblade key blank as described above. Then you can take that to your locksmith and get that cut. If the locksmith charges something in the 20-25 dollar range then we can save you some money. If the key is cut this way you know it will work since you would be making a copy of a known good key that works in your car. And for a 98-00 A4 for example, you wouldn't have to program the immobilizer. But you do need 2 keys in order to program the remote so it can lock and unlock the doors. One goes in the ignition and the one you program is used on the door. I'm sure you guys have seen the DIY guide for that procedure.

The problem can be if a key is cut using the vin number to the car. Should the car ever had the locks changed, rekeyed, repo'd then locks changed, or whatever else, then a vin cut key won't work since it would be cut by Audi to the vin number and locks as delivered from the factory. Then you have paid for a key that won't work for your car and in most cases there is no refund for a vin cut key. There is no history that parts or service can look up to see if that's been done either. Maybe if the work was done at a local dealer and it is a local car, but if an independant repair shop did the work no dealer would know it was ever done.

Based on experience with my own 2001 A4, and everything else I've read about this topic (which is a lot , 2001 A4's in the US do NOT have an immobilizer chip. See my post here, which includes a pointer to a web page that shows how to confirm whether you have an immobilizer or not, lest there is any doubt:

I've got a 2001 A4 1.8T and you absolutely cannot open the trunk from any remote, regardless of the remote type or vagcom programming. There is simply no electrical mechanism to release the latch. I think it's safe to assume that the 2001 model wouldn't have lost any features from the 2000 model, so the 2000 model should be the exact same key type: 2 button + panic button. This one (I have no affiliation to this auction):

Audi A4 S4 Keyless Remote Entry Fob MZ241081964 Uncut Key FCC 4D0837231D | eBay

That said, a remote with the trunk button should still work fine, you just won't be able to use that button.

Thanks for the feedback on the trunk latch issue. Looks like sedans for those year ranges only need a 2 button remote.

I talked to two of our techs on the model and year ranges for immobilizer. They remember TT's coming out with it, and were pretty sure all of them got it. You have an 01 A4 and don't have immobilizer. But the techs were pretty sure the S4 got the immobilizer for 01, it being the flagship model for the A4 line. Like you said, it defaults to whether or not you have the key symbol that lights up in the instrument cluster display with the key in the on position.

Thanks for the input, that helps me help out, always learning.

Ha, yep, can't speak for TT, S4, "2001.5", etc.. Definitely gets confusing. But the dashboard light is the easy way to find out for sure.

Thanks for the help guys! I was able to Shmooze the parts department at the "Local" (250 miles away) Audi parts department into giving me the part number i need and actually found a used key fob locally. Seems like the 3 key fobs are MUCH more common on Ebay. I'm waiting on an ebay flip key blank and I'll update if it works when i have the second key cut. Thanks again guys!
