LCD display has lines, dark around edges. Do I wiggle a connector or replace?
Good day fellow audi enthusiasts!
I am the proud owner of an (almost) new 1999 audia4 quattro with an easy 80k miles in it. Right now, I am hunting down all the little gremlins.
One of these gremlins is the instrument cluster LCD display. It seems to be drawing every other row of pixels, is dark around the edges and doesnt draw anything on the bottom rows at all. I have the analog clock style cluster.
Is this a well known issue? Do I need to replace the entire cluster or does the lcd unit come out? Do I just need to wigglea loose ribbon cable in the back of the cluster? How does one remove the cluster? I hope the dash doesnt have to come off.
I'm a seasoned auto enthusiast but I have yet to put a wrench to an audi so any input would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers and happy motoring,
Pete

Yes I believe it is a common problem with these cars. I don't have the LCD display but from what i've heard dead pixels in the instrument cluster are very common.
As for removing the cluster i think the cluster is one piece, but im not sure..... search around the forums i think this question has been answered a couple of times.

Some people have been able to replace the LCD display. But I have seem people post up saying that the real issue is the cable the connects to the LCD not the LCD itself, the wires are just made so small that they tend to decrease the amount of power supplied to the LCD over time which is why the lines start to fade and go out one ata time.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses!
What is the easiest way to get at the back of the cluster or to remove it completely? Doesnt look like the dash has a removable top panel. How is the cluster usually removed?
