Default LCD display infomation

Hi all just a quick one. I have a 1999 2.4 b5 and obviously have the dead pixels in the screen on my speedo.

I was going to change this over but after reading here I see its not worth it. My other main annoyance from this is that I cant scroll though to see what information i want it to show from the buttons on the end of the wiper stalk. Could this be a fault in the stalk itself or is it because the dead pixels are so bad (Nothing is displayed on the screen after the car is running for 2 hours) that the ribbon connector has broken so much it wont let me change it?

It also sometimes changes by itself and when changed to the MPG reading will not update to what im doing it just sits on 33 mpg. Could this be a stalk problem or a problem inside the Cluster?

I had mine rebuilt and everything has worked perfectly ever since. You can't diagnose a secondary problem w/o fixing the first problem, so it's a crap shoot.

I don't know why so many guys don't care about having their DIC working. I tried driving with it turned off for a while, but if the information is there: why not have access to it (by fixing it)?

That's how you'll know if you have other issues.

Just my opinion though.

Where abouts did you get yours rebuilt? I would love to have mine working just seems so damn expensive to get it done. Also my soldering skills are not up to scratch to do it myself.

There's a service provider on ebay. I can't remember how much I paid (it was under $200 I believe). Very fast turn around time (less than 1 week total - in my case)

You'll get more than your money back in use alone. I just found out that I've been driving around with a bad Ambient air temp sensor, because it doesn't throw a code. The only way I knew is by noticing that the DIC was reporting that it was -2* outside, when it was +80*.

As far as the soldering goes: I can solder pretty well, but there's no way I would ever attempt this. With the cost of the replacement screen, all of the work and the high likelihood of screwing up: it's not worth it IMHO.

Here's a complete rebuild for $150 w/ a 1 year warranty:

G/L w/everything

I wouldn't say that at all. I bought a cheap Chinese LCD on eBay, removed the cluster, give $20 a kid who solders for a living to replace. That was 5 1/2 years and 120,000 miles ago. Still no dead pixels.
