ummmm.... not really any mechanism at work there, just your computer cutting back on the boost and timing. basically, your engine goes from a f1 engine to a lawn mower engine. the only reason for limp mode is to protect the engine in case of malfunction, so assuming you're in limp mode periodically, there is a bigger problem to solve.

maybe you missed the point of the original post.. i know its the computer and its designed to protect the engine from something thats not functioning correctly.. anyways- common causes for limp mode, so people without a ******* clue have a place to start looking and get the car out of limp mode. better?

most common cause for limp mode, and the only one im aware of, is a dtc. if you scanned the ecu and havent retreived any dtc's (im assuming you would have posted them) than your problem most likely isnt limp mode. if you are chipped, it could be a problem with the programming.

well im picking up my vag com cable this weekend, so ill have more info later.. im just a little bit puzzled by what could trigger limp mode one day, and not another- im thinking something electrical and not vac leaks or a bad DV, but again i dont know where to start looking. only mod is GIAC.

You could have a bad MAF. My car was periodically going limp, but i replaced the MAF and it has been working fine ever since.
