looking at a 96-01 audi a4 1.8t need input guys and gals.
Im looking at a 96-01 a4 1.8t with 90-100k miles on most of them. people tell me they have alot of issues in general and wiring issues is this true? are these reliable cars with 100k on em and still able to be modded? is the aftermarket good and plenty for them? Im looking at the automatics as well if it matters? let me know guys?
I drive a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro myself. Its almost at 156K and still running strong. As for reliability I would say the drive trains on these are solid (provided you do routine maintenance as you should with any car) I mean I am still working on the stock clutch that the car came off the line with and its strong as ever. Now the drawback is that these engines are engineered to run hot so you may run into burning a little bit of oil or seals going but I haven't had any problems there only heard stories from former Audi repair techs. Another thing is be ready to throw your wallet out the door if you have something go out and don't do the work yourself. As with any import of this caliber they are expensive to put in the shop. Moding them I can't say...I have only done one mod and it was just replacing the stock intake with a cone filter (which I'm loving to the point of I don't turn the sound system or even the radio on these days over it) so I couldn't offer you insight on that...yet. All in all I love this car and haven't had any major problems but its just like any other car **** happens. hope this answers some of what you were looking for.
yea pretty much what silver said. just check for previous maintanence and keep up with all the little problems that ma occur. i have a 97 1.8t 140k and it runs great biggest issues ive had are cat converter alternator and battery to a total of 700 in 10 months but thats to be expected with older cars. if thats to much then you may wanna look into a cheaper car or atleast one that will not have as many issues as these tend to have. it all comes down to how well you take care of it though
Low down...dont get an automatic if you want to do real performance. Get a 1.8t Quattro for best performance. They can be expensive to maintain, but keep up with the maintenance and you will be fine. If you are DIYer, you will be even better!
Seriously, someone should make a group of threads and call it F.A.Q.
Then, we could "stick" it to the top of the page. I vote we call them "Stickies." Anyone else think this is a good idea? Probably not, because I don't think anyone would read them anyway...
