Which now that I say it out loud, maybe I'm on to something. If I make some kind of change to the running performance of the engine, seems like the computer or a sensor is picking up on the change and correcting whatever it is that is hindering the performance. Then, it somehow reverts back to limp mode in time. hmmmmmmm
None of that matters if it keeps throwing the P1143 code.

IF it's only on ONE BANK, ONE SIDE, cylinders 1-3 (left when standing infront of car), check your cam chain tensioner sensor...it's simple, cheap and on the front of the valve covers...It could be THAT sensor.....I've had them go bad on my 98, you can test it with a meter...there's a diy out there, just google it....

Reporting back...

So as I'd said, I took the car to a shop and they diagnosed a bad cam chain tensioner. Fortunately, they could not get the car in right away, so I called another shop that had high recommendations and had the car brought over there.

I will say their name as I have high respect for them for diagnosing the issue immediately. It was a clogged cat and bad o2 sensor(s). They replaced and it runs great again. I don't know why this issue was not showing up in the other diagnostics, but these guys took the initiative to put a scope up the cat and see it was toast. HILLSIDE IMPORTS in Beaverton Oregon.

The two other shops I will not mention because I know one of them has a lot of believers, but they mis diagnosed it after 5 hours of testing and checking only to say it was the cam tensioner. Good knowledgeable shop but ya got to wonder why they missed this. I would have wasted my money chasing a non issue.

The first shop just down the road from HILLSIDE IMPORTS, are idiots as their #1 tech said the engine was fine and the transmission was fried...idiots! I knew they were a joke when they first told me this. I scoffed at them and left.

Anyway, the car is back to running like a champ thanks to HILLSIDE IMPORTS in Beaverton Oregon. If I ever run into another issue I cannot figure out, I won't go to anyone else other then these guys. Best pricing for repairs too of all 3!

Thanks to all who chimed into to help me over this!
