low oil temp
Hey guys .. Now that winter is kindda going away, I have few issues that I need to take care of, with help of course..
1. The engine oil temp gauge remains around 175F ??? I dont see anyone replacing the sensor.. So dont really know where to start from on that.
2. The coolant temp gauge remains at center during idling but goes down if I turn on the heat or start driving. I changed the coolant sensor a year ago and it has probably been doing that ever since (getting lazy..). I got a timing belt job done inbetween from Blackforest Ind. and that guy told me that the thermostat was fine !!!! Maybe I need to re-replace the coolant sensor??
3. The heater hasn't been working ever since I bought in 2006.. I mean it puts out some heat from engine but not sufficient enough when outside temp goes <32F.
I have listed them under priority to fix them but maybe they interlinked to something....
Any ideas/suggestions are welcome..
Thanks for the help
Bix

2. deff sounds like a stat. I had that same issues shortly after I got my car. Did the timing belt and stat at the same time and it fixed it.
3. Sounds like it could be the heater core?
Maybe someone else can chime in who has had this heat issue.

Right now its been anywhere between 25-40 degrees in my neck of the woods. Oil temp is also around 175 and coolant temp is at the first line on the gauge, while driving. This is typical, if you are idling the temps will increase, keep in mind that it takes much longer for the oil temp to change. Coolant temp however does change a lot faster. When moving air passes by the radiator and cools the coolant, where as idling with no air flow past the radiator heats the coolant up.
As for the temperature air leaving the vents. I would lean towards bleeding the cooling system and or replacing the thermostat. Either that or the mixture flap isn't functions correctly.

Thermostat, in both cases. I had the same issues as you guys are describing and I did it

and I am now OK.

as far as your coolent temp hears my reasoning... if your idling for a long period of time it will go up to the middle as that would be right where the thermostat would open or the fans to kick on to keep it at normal operating temp. if you turn the heat on it will suck alot of the heat out of the coolent and push the coolent through the heater core and into the inside of the car therefore droping your engine temp so i mean thats fine and obviously if you drive the temp will go down unless your beating your car beacause you will have airflow through your radiator therefore also droping your coolent temp. oh and i hope your running g12 red coolent from the dealer if your running green **** um thats prolly half the reason why your heater core is prolly cloged up a bit
Temp guage should read at the middle line once fully warmed up. The reason the temp drops when driving is you are now getting airflow through the radiator, same idea with your heater core and the thermostat is opening prematurely so it overcools the engine.
When mine went in to the dealer to have the timing belt done I also mentioned that i wanted my stat replaced, they told me that the stat was fine, because they check it by idleing the car in the shop.
Also green **** is ok as long as you change it every 2 years and it isn't mixed with other types of coolants. It's corrosion inhibitors degrade much quicker than the g12 or whatever audi's coolant is. If you dont feel like doing a full flush until summer just fill it back up with the same stuff you have in there after you do the stat.
Also consider checking your new thermostat by boiling it in water. They are known to be sometimes bad out of the box. And the replacement is alot easier that that writeup makes it seem. You can access the housing from underneath where the lower radiator hose goes and its 2 10mm bolts that hold it in. can be done in 15 minutes.

Junya..
The same thing happened to me too...Like I had the timing belt changed about 6 months ago..It was having the same issue but the guy told me that he checked the stat while changin the belt and that it was fine.....
Also, I am confused here a little....
I know there is a stat under the hood closer to the dashboard which can be simply accessed from top. (Blue/Green colored stat)
But also you say that there is another stat that needs to be accessed from under the hood.
Why 2 stats?
