Default Low whinning sound and RPM Bounce Issues

Hi Guys,

Need some advise.

I have this low whinning sound that is coming when moving off in first gear (5 speed) and also feel the shift **** pulsating. This only happens in first gear and not in the rest (including reverse).

My RPM is also bouncing around a little (between 650-750rpm) and I have already cleaned the throttle body and MAF but that didn't help.

Question is, is my transmission on its way out? How much would it cost to fix that? Any one can help?

Thank You

I have a whining noise in first and second gear between 3k 3300 rpm, coming from the drivers side, is that similar to yours?

Pretty much that is it. A mech I talked to said it could be the timing belt (tensioner) put on too 'tight'? Seems unlikely as it has already been 15k miles since i was put in.

Bouncing RPM's is probably a vaccum leak somewhere...hope someone else can elaborate.

I don't think it is a vaccum leak as the mech I took it too spray 'something' on a few hoses to check for leaks and cannot find any.

A co-worker told me today that the earlier A4 (96-98) are pretty noisy (low whinning noise perpetually) in the engine bay. Anyone can confirm this?

Hi ,

Mines a 1996 Quattro 2.8. It also sounds like the power steering on its way out but that has just been recently changed in nov 07. Any ideas?

Nope. Doesn't sound like it is coming from the fan. I have paid a mech to diagnois and it came down to these three things: "power steering pump, belt tensioner, or Tranny"

The issue here is I don't want to start throwing $$ into it without a certainity it will fix the issue.

Check the P/S fluid. When you turn the wheel, does
it get louder?
