That is because you own a narrow band car, mafless only works on the 2001+ because it has a wide band which allows the ecu to adjust the AFR even at WOT.

The nice thing about going mafless is the fact that the maf going bad over time is no longer a problem. The ecu mainly uses the maf for load to help set adv timing, ecu pretty much goes off the 02 readings when it comes to adjust AFR.

Mafless is nice when racing a built open header V8 too.

Isn't that what carbs are for?

Lol yes, which is why my 87 fox is converted back to a Holly double pumper. But you misunderstood me, I meant its nice to have a mafless tune when your racing AGAINST a big V8. They can get a bit jumpy because of the soundwaves being so harsh.

Oh. I thought maybe you were talking about your V8 car, never even thought about the fact that you were talkign about racing a mafless A4 against a V8. lol

Never had a problem racing against V8 cars when I was running a maf, even against the open header trailer V8's at the track. Plus I dont think most A4 owners will have an issue with that because the V8 will just pull up and pull away.

Nothing like having the import driver at the line next to me keep looking down at his tach to make sure his car is still on, because all he can hear and feel is my mustang next to him lol. Funny thing is my A4 might be faster down the track than my dragster 5.0, guess it'll be a suprise when I put the Audi back together.

Hey Mike, ive been reading up on this topic and someone said it would be better to keep the maf since it can make adjustments by reading air density which changes with altitude and you said it is also used to make adv timing adjustments based on load. So would the only advantage of running mafless be one less sensor that could go bad? and what would you do in my situation maf or mafless? i live in vegas where it gets REALLY HOT during the summer if that makes any difference.

Our cars have a barometric sensor that lets the ecu know when there is a change in altitude. All ECU cars have this sensor since not all cars come with a maf and it has been this way for some time now. Exactly why ECU cars run the same when you drive up to a much higher elevation, not so if you are driving a car with carbs.

Yes the maf is used to help the ecu adjust timing by giving it a load reading. But the ecu can also do this based on throttle position and rpm. This is called speed density tuning. Basically just like my stand alone that does not have a MAF or a 02 sensor, but does use a MAP(boost pressure) sensor.

I guess you must be talking about street imports, because I know the imports can get pretty loud at the track since they are usually running open header too. I know my car is pretty loud since all I dont run an exhaust at all and pretty much cant hear the open header V8 cars when revving my motor. Those guys must be sitting in their car thinking, damn am I going to get spanked by that damn 4 cylinder 4 door famly car. lol
