My car sounds supercharged, but it's not. HELP!
So here's the scoop:
I've got a whine from the engine, directly related to revs. It occurs at all rpm levels. Sounds power-steering related but doesn't vary at all with turning the wheel, even lock to lock, and it's a bit quieter than I'd expect from a ps pump. It sounds more belt related. I'd replaced the alternator a while back (after it was def. toast) and the sound went away (i think) for a day or two but came right back. I didn't replace any belts or pulley's with the alt. Any ideas?

My power steering pump makes a really annoying whine/screech that sounds like a supercharger sometimes. Same situation, occurs at all RPM levels pretty much. For me it's the bearings inside the pump going bad. When I did my timing belt last week I spun the pump by hand and could hear it clicking.
So, I'd say power steering pump.

Def. not speakers.
I thought briefly that it could be the turbo but it reacts too quickly and directly to the throttle. I have a very light weight fly wheel so the car revs and drops back VERY quickly (for an A4) but the turbo doesn't react as quickly (lag and residual spool). I can hear my turbo spool and wind down but the two sounds are definitely separate.
