My first engine light
my engine light came on this morning when i started my car and i though maybe because it's 6 degrees out here, but it was still on when my car warmed up. i took it to autozone to get it hooked up to their vag and they said it is my idle speed control throttle position adaption, i have a dirty throttle body. the probable causes states:1.open or short circuit condition, or 2.failed throttle valve control module. not sure if its a do it yourselfer or a mechanics job. any suggestions?
A dirty throtle body in frigid cold temps could be the problem. Clean it (remove to clean properly-have new gasket), clear the code, and do a throtle body alignment (key in ignition to ON for 5-10 mins) and see what happens.
As he said, give cleaning the TB and boot a shot. It's a DIY. I don't know how hard it is on a 1.8T, but on my 2.8 it was very difficult due to space limitations. If you have the 1.8, you ought to have more room to maneuver, but I would be ready for some bruised forearms and skinned knuckles.
It doesn't take anywhere near that long.
