Unfortunately the motor/ECU combo in that particular car doesn't lend itself to modification. There are almost zero off-the-shelf power mods for that car. Your best bet is to make it look, stop, and turn better and leave it at that.

I had a 97 2.8Q before I bought my avant and its a nice reliable motor but that's about it.

The tune written for the G1/G2 isn't compatible with your ECU, and the blower itself isn't designed for use with the 12v V6, which you have.

Just buy a 1.8T, unless you have some strange connection to your car like I do!:P If you want BIG hp, go with the 2.7T or 4.2 V*, but those are BIG projects, so I've read.

To "drop in" a 1.8T you'd pretty much need a complete donor car. You'd need to swap in the engine, accessories, the entire wiring harness forward of the dash board, ECU, the gauge cluster, catalytic converter, the entire exhaust. I'm sure there's a myriad of things I'm forgetting.

TL;DR: Like clayson said, unless you're emotionally attached to this car, it's far more practical to sell it and buy a 1.8T than it would be to do the engine swap. Furthermore, if you ARE that attached to this car that you're willing to keep it and do a motor swap, I would go for a 4.2, 2.7T, or VR6 swap instead of a 1.8T. Get weird with it!

And even then I'd skip the 2.7 since you can already get that in a B5. Go VR6 or 4.2
