Default New A4 owner

Hi All

I just purchased a 2001 A4 1.8T 5 speed, 94000 miles. Car looks to be in pretty good shape, drives well. One small ding in right front wheel well. A couple of questions...the oil pressure gauge does not move much above the low end number, the coolant guage also reads low, and the volt meter is around 14. Any comments, ideas..Would u recommend bringing to an audi dealer to run a full diagnostic for $128?? Thanks and looking forward to being a b5 owner.

Congrats on the car. I'l try to answer your questions as best as I can. It is a good idea, btw, to search this forum for your answers as I know that these questions have been answered, some very recently. Your oil pressure gauge is fine...worry if it goes to the other end Depending on how you run your car and what the air temp is outside can affect that gauge. Turning your heat on will lower that gauge reading. If you run your car at idle for a while with no heat, this should give you a fairly accurate reading of about at the half-way point. My volt reads the same and my car is running well. Something to consider is purchasing a vag-com cable and software from ross-tech.com This allows you to run diagnostics on your car yourself and is an essential tool for audi and vw owners. Search the forum as there is an amazing amount of info on this. Hope this helps.

Also, make sure you do the 100k services done...dont skip out. These cars needs maintenance done correctly and on time or else you really run the risk of taking the bus for a while...

That is an oil temp gauge, not oil pressure (there is only a dummy light for oil pressure). Normal temps is probably somewhere past the second tick mark. Coolant is normal to be right in the middle, but anywhere in between is okay just as its past the second tick mark I would say too.

Yeah like mentioned 100k service is key, make sure the timing belt has been done, and if it hasnt been done do it NOW, the original tensioners fail early and it would be a shame for that to happen to you right after you got the car, especially with 100k so close anyway.

The coolant temperature sensors are not quality parts so you might need a new one, and thermostats also fail. Your temperature when warmed up should be right around the middle of the gauge.

all alternators will produce a current of 13-14.5 volts, if you are anywhere in there, your good!
