Talking New Audi owner

Hello everyone,

I bought a 98 audi a4 2.8, im the second owner, the car had been sitting for 6 months.
It needs new oil, and some maintenance. the car has 110,000 miles on it. I need to change oil, but i dont have the owner Manuel,
1. What brand and type of oil should i use?
2. The ABS light is on and the brake light keeps flashing, idk what to do. I searched around the forum but didn't find much.

All help is appreciate it.

Thanks to all

First off congrats on the purchase youll love the car as far as the oil goes I use castrol syntec... factory our car came with 5w-40 but 5w-30 works just fine. And as for the brake light it is most likely your abs unit mine went out at around 107,000 miles. Hope that helped. Welcome to the wonderful world of audi ownership! (and if you already have an audi I take back my welcome)

I will welcome you as well. I have the brake and ABS light as well and I know for a fact the ABS unit is shot. Have it rebuilt, it'll be much cheaper.

Isn't it better to run 5-40 in hotter conditions? On average its 100+ here and I ran 10-40 cuz the manual sayss use 20-40 in my weather but to hell with a 20 weight haha... So would 5 or 10w-40 be ok to run?

Use Castrol Syntec 0w30 European Formula AKA "German Castrol" - 5w30 and all other weights are not even close to as good. Mobil 1 is not close to as good. Not even Amsoil tops it. It's one of the thicker 0w30 oils - it's actually closer to a 40 weight.

Autozone sells it

ABS crap can get expensive...

there isnt a one size fits all oil and you can not say that no other oils are even close to as good. thats not true at all. mobil1 and german castrol use the same PAO base. Amsoil or Elf/Total are fantastic oils, most say they are better then mobil1.

you only need a low first number (Xw30) in the winter. if your area never sees freezing temps, you are fine to run 10w- or 15w- whatever. the lower the first number is the easier it flows when cold. 0w- is only necessary in the winter, though it wont hurt anything if used in summer.

Read test results at bobistheoilguy.com

Mobil 1 is not even close to GC.

perhapse you can link the specific results you are talking about. those oil analysis places' results are anecdotal at best. 25-50% margin of error.

there are also plenty of people who recommend other oils, even specifically for our cars. german castrol isnt the be-all end-all of oils.

Welcome to the forums.

I've personally been using Royal Purple Synthetic 0W-30.
