Well if you can shift like Mike then you should be good without any upgrades. But I beleive his case is somewhat exceptional.

"Comnplete nonsense" ... "the only upgrades you will need" - so spending money on upgrades is necessary or nonsense?

My point is that it doesnt sound like Kayakman is going to surpass the capabilities of the automatic and therefore he should not dismiss it as an option, especially when he doesnt seem to be a diehard stick guy.

I have had two tiptronics... I don't regret it. I actually enjoy the tip a lot.

I found a 97 a4 with Quattro online just a bit ago. Gold, bone stock, and apparently no problems. 73k miles, which is excellent. I going to try to take it to my mechanic, but I'm also going to bring a friend whose an audi nut to check it out with me. Any words of advice as far as what to look for? He says he's changed the belts and stuff around 48k, so thats ok I think.

since when are a clutch and flywheel part of the transmission? The question was whether or not the transmission neeeded to be "built".... which one was more durable... The stock manual transmission is way more durable and can handle way more power... It doesnt need a tipchip to keep from shifting like dog ****... Manual for the win... sorry.

sounds like a very good candidate... If your friend knows his ****, then you should be fine. Just make sure the timing belt was one of those belts he was talking about, otherwise you will want to do it immediatly and push for a price break because of it. Id check for oil leaks, control arms bushings and read over the newb guide one more time... you should be fine. Also if you do buy it, use the bigger size Mann filter for the oil. Good luck.

I have always been a stick guy. My wife didn't like them so when I bought our mkv gti I got the 6speed titronic at first I loved it then about 3 months into it I really missed a stick.

ok i think i can kind of relate to you here with your manual/tiptronic debate. My dad has always driven a stick so thats what i learned to drive and naturally i wanted my first car to be a manual. I kind of regret it now. Don't get me wrong i love my stick but there are sometimes when i'm sitting in traffic and i wold love to just pop it into auto and not have to use both feet lol. Second if you get an auto/tip there is no real way you can **** it up by driving it where as with a manual you can ruin your clutch and synchros by riding the clutch and missing shifts in those stop light drags lol. Personally i would get a tip and get a stick second time around.

Another thing is when you are looking for your car don't look for cars that are $6000 i would look for something thats 4500 to 5000 so you have some cash in your pocket for something unexpected.

Last, don't rule out high mile cars. You can find some good deals just bc these cars have 120-150k on them and they still run strong as hell. GL.

lol, okay I totally would do that, but I'm taking a loan out for the six grand. I can afford the 6, but if I can find it cheaper I'm definatly going cheaper. I have $1200 in the bank for whatever and since its bone stock I'm going to have to start paying for any mods I want.

Also, whats the Mann filter and where can I get it?

the good ol manual vs auto debate - let me say a few things since my quotes were picked apart and then I wont comment anymore

"manual can handle way more power" - we both said this already, the point I will have to repeat is that if you never exceed the limits of the auto then it doesnt matter if the manual can potentially handle more, right?

"when are the clutch and flywheel part of the transmission" - ok so the parts you need to upgrade are not technically part of the transmission but are a direct consequence of it. The real question, I thought, was what you need to upgrade and how much you need to spend to run something like an eliminator setup on a manual vs auto?

Ok, so I just re-read the Newbie's guide again and it said I should get a FMIC if I chip the engine. I plan on either upgrading to a KO4 and then chipping, or just sticking with the KO3 and adding a performance chip. Does this really require a front mount? Also, I found a low mileage car, the same one I talked about earlier with 73k on it, and the owner said he replaced the timing belt at 48k. Is this early? Should I be worried about that? Because my logic says that if it failed at 48k, then the new one should come around to failing point around 90k. and then again at 130k, etc...
