New owner, timing belt and spare key questions...
Just picked up a 2001 A4 Quattro 105k miles. Called the dealers that have serviced it and found out timing belt hasn't been done yet as far as anyone can tell. I just need some advice/recommendations on t-belts kits, I wanna go ahead and do everything while I'm in there. I was thinking about going with a Kevlar belt and lightweight crank pulley also. As far as where to get the parts, which ones are gonna be the best quality? It looks like ECS tuning has a pretty complete package.
Also, all I got from the previous owner was one key broken off from the remote. I'd like to get a whole new key fob and keep the key I have now as a spare. How can I do this as cheaply as possible?
Thanks

I just bought a new key with a remote for my daughter's 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro from the local Knoxville Audi Dealer two days ago. The car only had a standard key with it when I bought it. Since the key blank has to be cut from a key that works and the new remote chip has to be specifically programmed to match each individual car, I figured the most expensive way to get a new key made would be to wait until she lost the only key that worked on the car. The route I chose ended up costing right around $200.00 instead of (potentially) three times that amount.

Like just about anything else you might want, they have transmitter keys on ebay, I'm in need of a second key, too. Last time I looked, I think I saw them for around $70.00 uncut. I'd guess that getting it cut would cost $20 or so at a locksmith due to the unique type of key, but I don't know for sure. I just changed the batteries in my remaining key and had to reactivate or reprogram it, which was done by locking and unlocking the door with the key a couple of times and then the transmitter worked with the car, not sure if that would work with a new key or if more work has to be done, maybe someone else here knows that answer.

Yea, I'm just not sure if I could find a locksmith the machine to cut the key. Also, I don't quite understand the code you need to know to make sure you buy the right key fob. The previous owner did give me the 4 digit code to disengage the immobilizer. Is that all I need?
oh yea, I just ended up ordering the ultimate belt kit from ecstuning.com. I just dont have the money right now for a lightweight pulley or Kevlar belt.

I ordered my key fob from a trust worthy ebay merchant. What you need to order the correct key the Part Number. All number are pretty much the same concerning all audi a4's, but what the difference is the last letter. Call your local audi dealer and ask them what the part number for your key fob is, come up with a story saying that you have one but its not programmed and that you want to make sure you have the right one before you head out there so "they" can program it....its relatively easy to do it yourself. Once you have the complete part number......go ahead and look for your fob on ebay or wherever you would like.

IMO if you were running synthetic you really don't need to worry about the 5500 miles. You said it came out as gear oil well it doesn't really matter what it may look like as long as there is no metal shavings making a rainbow in the oil container you emptied into. Get some good synthetic maybe a thicker weight and run that.. I have heard bad things about the seafoam. My car is 175k been running 20 pounds since 64k daily driven oil changed every 45 to 5. Oil isn't normally what wears out it's the filter
