Smile newbie here, struggling to understand...

Hi everybody!

Just bought this Audi A4 (2001 on registration but 2000 model from research) 1.8 from a friend. It was more a 'friendly transaction' more than anything (he needed the money) but i'm planning to make this my project car and not my main daily driver.

As for now, I'm stumped with the VIN-research (been doing that for most of my other cars). My VIN is WAUZZZ8DZYA157895 but can't seem to find as much info as i'd like. Except for this: http://www.bitnet.ro/vw/vindecoder/i...895&lang=en-GB which is also rather cryptic for me (the VIN results given by Mercedes models were clearer IMHO).

So, here are my concerns:

1. Can anyone help me out with getting a 'clearer' overview of the car with the VIN above?
2. I'm confused (and i've done a bit of research especially with this great site) regarding just when to check and have replaced the timing belt. The car's currently got 81,000kms to it. I think most of you guys refer to 80,000 miles interval right? Also, from the link i got above, i tend to understand the time to change is around 180,000 kms? Now i'm really confused.
3. The only real problem i can see with the car is that there's this weird thing about the hazard signals only working for the LEFT (driver's) side. The bulbs are ok (e.g. when turning right or left) but when i press the hazard button, only the left side blinks.
4. Question, is this car, like other cars, supposed to AUTOMATICALLY LOCK on certain speeds during driving? This car doesn't and i'd very much like for it to. Is there a way to program it to enable this feature if ever?
5. Oh, another problem i think is that there's this crappy, scraping sound on the driver's side speaker (especially when the music is cranked up). But i've done some reading here and some advise points toward 'loosend' cone covers or something like that. I'll look into taking off the door panel this weekend to check.

I know i've got a lot of questions above. I hope you guys would indulge me. I've only had this car for about a week but i'm actually beginning to fall in love with it. Yes, two of my favorite mechanics are trying to convince me to resell it cause they say it's more expensive to maintain than usual but i think i'm beginning to be challenged even more by their statement. Just told them to start liking to learn new things (this is actually my first Audi by the way). Audis aren't very many here in the Philippines but they're getting to be more and more popular every year.

Like i said, i'm beginning to fall in love with this car. It's way zippier than my E-class and definitely more maneuverable than the Explorer. And I don't even have to worry about the gas consumption (1.8 engine Yey!)

I hope some of you guys can pitch in some (even all) of the answers to my questions above. Again, please indulge my first (and very long post). This forum is great. This post won't be my last (but would be my longest i assure you.)

Cheers and more power!

By the way, I'm saying the results i got for the VIN were cryptic because the site still had to make me input the engine type and the gearbox type. I answered basing from the car sticker that i copied. But isn't the VIN enough for the site to give me these details and not ask me about it in the first place? And, for three or four other free VIN-checking sites, they couldn't find information about my car using the VIN

Hi loktian. Thanks for a very very prompt reply. Would you know how i can program it? By myself i mean? Wouldn't want to go to the stealers just for this. I actually spent most of the night researching on how to do it but just can't seem to find the instructions how to. Or could you refer me to a link on where to get the instructions? I'd be much obliged. Thanks!

on a 2001 the timing belt will be good til 100,000 miles. 96-99 are the cars that need to be changed every 60-70k miles.

what information are you looking for? do you know your engine code?
https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=109457
if it was actualy made in march 2000 then its ATW.

do you have an owners manual? theres a sticker on the inside of the spare tire cavity under the trunk liner with all sorts of codes on it (including engine code) that tell you exactly what your car has. its the same info that would be in your owners manual on a sticker from the origional dealer.

question has been answered

the hazard control switch is a somewhat common problem, it could possibly be on its way out, or it could be another relay somewhere else. normaly they stop working all together, but maybe the contacts on one side got broken somehow. you can buy a new switch for like $80 or find one in a junkyard or from someone parting out a car for much less.

if the car doesnt do this already, you cannot program it to. cars that do this have an input to the central locking system that tells it when the car is in motion, to lock the doors. its not something (atleast on B5 Audis) that can be activated or deactivated.

the car is 9-10 years old. the foam/rubber speaker surrounds only last so long before they dry out, this is a common problem. just order a new speaker and youl be set for another 10 years. dont take the door pannel off untill you have a replacement, its alot of work to have to do again once you get a speaker.

I think that is incorrect... From my understanding you can program it w/ VAGcom and the appropriate code.

You can typically program the auto locking using a VAG-COM code.

Usually the car will lock it self when being driven on certain speed and unlocks it self when the key is taken out of the ignition. However, I believe it can only be programed to B5's from certain years.

I hope this helps but you can PM me if you need more info.

i know that atleast for my 98 (maybe all pre 99.5's?) this feature is unavailable. i actualy prefer having control over my door locks.

what if you happen to drive into an angry mob, or more possibly zombies, your doors are locked so they cant get to you but they surround your car. your sidearm is in your glovebox but its locked. you take your key out of the ignition to unlock it, but then all your doors unlock and the zombie mob drags you thru the street and consumes your flesh before you can reach your weapon.

obviously the most likely scenario.
