Newby owner checking in!
Hello folks,
I just picked up my 1998 A4/5 1.8T Quattro today and am very impressed, even with the lack of power steering, bad passenger upp ball joint and driver cv axle. Even with all that is still is smooth as can be and am very impressed.
Half the on board computer things pixels are inoperable but is still readable. I have an air bag sensor light on due to airbags being deployed years ago from what was told and never reset!??!? also the abs light is on.
Nothing that would put me in fear of the car, i have mechanical knowledge but am not audi knowledgable (yet). Anyways stopping by to say hi and hopefully make this forum my new home.
Happy shifting

I also have an aftermarket deck that needs to come out and have heard that the computers, etc. go through teh radio. what could i expect with putting in aftermarket radio's and such? what type of thigns are effected?
Oh boy, I hope you like fixing things
Welcome.
If airbags were deployed, you'll need to replace the airbag control module. I deployed my airbags last year, and paid something like $120 for a used but functional airbag control module (likely that our cars share the same model).
ABS light on is very common, does the brake light flash as well?
Strange that it lacks power steering, have you checked the P/S fluid level?
For the radio, follow this:

Also, I'd STRONGLY suggest you invest in this:

Best tool I ever bought for my car.

I have not seen a flashing brake indicator but what i see also i can not see the computer light up "OK" but i do see the mileage and temp bellow *shrugs*.
I will look into the radio and the module for airbags along with the vag-com that i have read a lot about in the last few weeks.
Thanks for the help metal and no, i don't mind working on things, it is kind of what i do

Flashing brake light along with ABS light likely means you need to have your ABS module rebuilt. Seems like pretty much everyone's car has experienced this
Right now you simply have no ABS functionality, and the way to fix it is to have the ABS module rebuilt. Generally this costs $100-150.
Not sure what the "OK" area is.

So, instead of making a new post i figured i would jsut add to this one.
i was driving earlier with no issues and the car stalled out of no where. lsot all power it seemed but the lights, radio , etc were fine. Pulled over while driving with the car off in a sense and tried to restart. it cranked for about 10 times and nothing. did it a few more times with a few minutes of rest and restarted with no issues. idea's?
I also noticed after pulling out the cluster that i am missing the bulb to the check engine light so i took the high beam light and put it in and low and behold the CEL is on. Bastard!!
No vag-com so no codes at this moment . sorry unless someone near Mancehster, NH feels like lending a hand.
Thanks in advanced Gents.
