Default No light when I open the door

Hi All
My problem is that when I open any door of my 1996 A4 the light in the roof does not work. I have set the light switch correctly in the roof and it does not work. However all light in the top are functional. Adding to that when I do take the key out of the car the lights in the roof of the car do light correctly. I even tried replacing the whole light module that is in the top roof but that did not change anything.

So I do believe that there is some IC or some Fuse that is broke but I just cant seem to find out which one. Can anyone tell me which AC to replace ? Thanks
Regards

it says 1996 in the first sentence. what you could do is get the wiring from a car that does have it and implant it

Hi All
I forgot to mention that it was working initiallly, after a while it used to work sometimes and some other times it would not work. Then it stopped totally.

Have you checked the switch in the door? I think it is part of the locking mechanism. Worth a once-over to ensure that it has power, is plugged in, not corroded, etc.

It does not work if I open any of the four doors. So I think I might be something central rather then something related to one door. Am I mistaken ?
thanks

Well, if one of them is stuck as an "open" circuit then none of the others would work IMO. I would check the Drivers, as that gets the most traffic.

Hmm, trying to bring up the diagram in Bentley with no luck (computer crashed last month, and it was one of the victims). Not 100% sure where the switch is located, but should be part of the locking mechanism. Also not 100% sure if it is a "normally open" or "normally closed" circuit. Without the diagrams, or opening the door panel, it is a bit hard to diagnose.

One thing I do remember with my 96 is that if I leave the door open too long, the lights go out, and they won't switch back on until the door which was left open is closed again...opening the other doors will not turn the light on. That is why I think that one of the switches is bad...thus you can not get the system to get an OK and go back to normal operation.

Hopefully another member can chime in on how to most easily diagnose the door switches.
