I went down to my local self serve auto wreckers and found a VW Passat (which I rapped for every usable part), took out the oil cooler and fitted it on the audi the same day.

When I installed the cooler and gave the system another flush there was still oil in the water but I gave it a few more flushes and now the water is crystal clear. Drove the car around all day and still the water is clear .

Very relieved it wasn't a HG problem. Will put some fresh g12 tomorrow + install new coolant reservoir.

Thanks HEAPS for the advice.

P.S - the oil cooler was only $8.
