The only thing I can think of (yes, I'm an Audi noob) is that maybe the 1.8Ts that take more oil are using bigger filters and/or have larger oil pans after replacement or rebuild.

Yeah, right after I posted that I thought to myself... I bet they just put a bigger oil pan on or something. Oh well, still runs right?

Exactly! Just makes oil changes a teensy bit more expensive.
