Default One or Two Early problems

Hi,
I recently bought a 1999 1.8T Quattro and i've found a couple of things that i didnt notice when testing it. I hope this hasnt been covered before. The first problem was that the heater wouldnt get very warm and the temp guage was constantly on cold. Having researched it on this site that would probably be the thermostat.

The other problem is an electrical one. There are a few "odd goings on". 2 examples of this is that if you have the headlights on the display on the radio goes off. Also the climate control/Air Con dual screens seem to go off and on as and when they like. They work when you press the buttons but the display just shows nothing.

The first thing that springs to mind is a bad earth somewhere.

The final thing i would appreciate some advice or ideas about is that i was expecting a bit more power. It goes ok but it certainly doesnt feel like 180hp. Book time for 0-60 is somewhere in the mid 7's but it really doesnt feel like it. Could it be i expect too much or that due to the Quattro its a smoother delivery so doesnt feel so fast? I was in a 150HP Mondeo the other day and when the driver put his foot down to turn out of a junction it really pushed me in my seat. Something i didnt get from my 'apparantly' 180hp Audi. Is there anything i could check to make sure the engine is working correctly, mass air flow sensor for example?

Again apologies if this has all been done before, i appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Ross

You're not feeling 180hp because the '99 only puts out ~150hp. The '01 comes with the k03s, putting it up there to about 170hp.

Not sure what's wrong with your electrical system.

I agree with you about the heater/temp gauge. Bought mine with similar symptoms.. swapped in a new thermostat and everything started to work fine.

I just swapped in a new thermo with my timing belt change. I think its bad and not opening, the lower hose doesn't get warm at all, and the temperature just goes up and up. So now I'm going to drain the coolant, for the 5th time!

We just explained this. It's not a "K03s" doing that.

Who told you that you have 180 hp? The seller?

1999 1.8t has 150 hp.

I got my info from Parkers. Under the 95-01 Section of the Audi A4 it states that the 1.8T Quattro Sport has 180Hp. So are they mistaken?

The electrical error still confuses me. I cant even think where to start investigating the root cause of that one.

Just realised that i didnt state it was the Sport in he original post. However, did they do a quattro version of the standard 150hp motor?

All "sport" means is that you have upgraded sport suspension, and maybe a sport steering wheel and a few other minor changes--nothing is done to the engine. You'll still have 150hp with the B5 1.8t engine. The only B5 1.8t engine with more is the 2001 engine and that has 170hp.

You can see if you have a sport model by looking at your shocks. If they're red, you have sport suspension.

Yes, they did quattro for the 1.8t engine. I'd say quattro is more common than 2WD.

Ok so i've only got 150hp. Not really a major problem. It just surprises me that a site like Parkers would not break down the 1.8t Quattro into pre 99 and post 99 versions. They just published the most powerful version.

Although it still doesnt quite feel like 150hp. I used to have a Honda Accord 1.8 with 130hp and it feels slower than that.

My mom has a 2004 Accord with, I think, a 2.4, and my A4 (which has yet to be tuned) is a bit faster than it. Maybe your turbo needs a rebuild or replace.
