Default opinions on buying 2000 1.8t

So a friend of mine is looking at buying a 1.8t 5 speed and i would like some opinions before she buys it. The owner said that on decel after going to high rpm's the car will stall because of a vacuum leak in the blow off valve. He also told her that it had 5 psi then he unplugged the wastegate to get it to the 20 psi its at now. The car also refuses to connect to a scaner to read the check engine light but the owner believes its needs a map sensor and mass air as well. The car is alittle rough but seems ok for the price, im sure she talked him down as well, something shes good at. Personally i only have owned 2.8's so I dont really have experience with a 1.8 but would like all honest opinions please!

Here is the link as well,

That's a mess and way overpriced! Run the opposite direction and fast unless you need a winter project. He's f'ed it up and is now looking to push it off on your friend.

Try to stay away from cars that have been modified previously unless you are ready to take the motor apart and basically rebuild the entire car.

You never know how bad the previous owner messed it up, like Husker has already stated.

and I seriously doubt if it has leather. Not offered on the 2000 A4 to the best of my knowledge. So the guy is a smoke blower. Run away fast.

She backed out of this one and is now looking at different one. Thanks for the input!

Good for her. Try to stay away from anything that has been modified. Remember who is doing most of those mods.

My 2000 2.8 must have been one of the few that came with beige ecru leather.

"Buffalino" leather available with 2.8 only. Odd that they specified leather based on the engine. We 1.8 ers got high quality vinyl. Still looks like new

To most people, if it's not cloth it's gotta be leather, common mistake to make. Also buffalino is friggin great, 240k km and my seats still look and feel brand new, not even any marks or scratches. It's the toughest leather I've seen in a long time.

Good that you skipped that car OP, buying a modified car is buying someone else's problems, and that someone else usually has no idea what they're doing and end up doing more harm than good. Also, avoid any ads that have things like LOOK HERE written in the title, or even worse, L@@K. That just means the seller thinks he's being smart by grabbing your attention when in reality it just makes them look stupid and sketchy.

I agree! I pass on cars that have been "shade tree" modified. Some hot shot mechanic f's things up and then gets cute on Craig's list to get out from under his mess. If the mods are so great why not keep the heap?
