Over Heating probs... :(
Alright so this is my first audi and im stoked about it, i love driving it when it dosnt over heat! anyway to the problem,
Alright so i bought it off this guy and he didnt ahve that much coolant in it, so i let that slide, put some in and it still over heats, he said the previous owner replaced the timing belt at 100xxx but he said he isnt sure if they did the water pump or not, but if you replace the timing belt the logical thing to do is the water pump since its right there awhile, so im thinking maybe the t-stat isnt opening it or theres some blockage somwhere..... you can drive it for about 10-15 minutes until it gets really hot and starts to smoke
Also the Temp gauge on the dash isnt working which im assuming that is just a sensor...
its a 2001 A4 1.8T
if you could help out asap that would be great even tho Christmas is right here.

it smells like coolant, and it drives fine it just gets really hot and overheats, and i put more antifreeze/water in the tank but its gona know so ive got a leak but no idea from where, Oil level is good aswell
CK is probably right. if it isnt the flange, its one of the 3 lines attached to it. if any other coolant lines are bulging around/after a fitting, assume they are all bad so you do not have to do this again. i think a kit is about 150$. sounds like it drains very rapidly. another thing it could be is the coolant temp sensor. it has a retarded plastic C clip ive had fail on me before.
it was the Coolant flange, that thing was broken completely, just in half.... I replaced that a couple O-rings, and I plan on doing the T-stat just to have it completed, it runs good now I drove it and the gauge stayed in the middle, I just hope the tstat isn't clogged at all
Well here we go again :/. alright so i can drive the car it works woooh
but however after a while of driving my Reservoir starts to steam and get really hot along with the engine its self and the upper hose... The guy i bought it off of said he had a blown HG but he had that replaced, and there is also alot of milky tan liquid in my entire cooling system....i dont know what to do, i still have to replace the T-stat...maybe its clogged or needs some serious flushing......also when i turn the heat on in my car i get nothing but cold air..
please help

that sounds like a bad head gasket causing a clogged t-stat and heater core. pull every line, hose the block out with a heavy detergent, radiator too. replace lines and hope for the best. is the oil really thin like it has water in it? does your coolant smell a little like gasoline? compression test it and youll have all the answers youll need.
