i have a 1997 A4 1.8t 5 speed nd today as i shifted into third i heard a slight click or pop. then i continued driving nd noticed while in 4th gear...the shifter poped into neutral..i tried every other gear nd same problem. wen i got home, i tried to reverse into my driveway nd it wouldnt go into reverse. i tried with the enging off nd still same problem...all help and suggestions are appreciated thankyou very much

Its obviously a mechanical problem. Take the center console panel and shift boot off and check the linkage for any issues, adjust it if necessary. Check the linkage at the trans, if its all good its time for a rebuild.

 

You might have broke the shift linkage slider bolt, there are 2 of them that hold the slider inside the transmission to the housing. When I broke one of those I had problems getting the car into gear.

 

your syncos might be out of wack too

 

If it was 1 or 2 gears but no way all the sycros went bad at 1 time.

 

well today i took the shifter apart nd found the bolt that pivots on the bottom of the shifter broke...i put in a new bolt and problem fixed. but still no reverse.

 

I think you'll find the answer the the reason in your sig...!

Did you center back out the shifter after you replaced the bolt? Also, check the rods and detents to make sure nothing is bent.
