This is my first post on these forums so I apologize if this is a repost, but I wasn't able to find any topics with this issue.

I have a 1997 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro which ran into an issue the other day. I was coming home from dinner with my wife driving how I did in Iraq (oops >.< lol) and the check engine light began to blink and the car began to bog down. I turned off the A/C to see if it was the natural bog down from the A/C running that I've experienced in all my cars and it wasn't that. I consulted the Owners Manual and read that a flashing Check Engine Light is a problem with the emissions system, so immediately I figured a cylinder wasn't firing... After reading online a bit, I've come to understand that it could be a bad Coil Pack, but the weird part is that half way coming home from dinner the car began to run fine. I started it the next day to head to PT and it ran fine again, but when I started the car to come home it began to bog down again.

If I need to give anymore details please let me know.

Any ideas?

 

flashing cel = a misfire

use the search function on the forums and you will find a TON of info about diagnosing bad coil packs. in a nutshell you take the pack from a cylinder thats misfiring and swap it with another, if the misfire follows the pack to the new cylinder, the coil pack is bad.

oh and get your codes scanned.

 

yeah dude, run to autozone to see which cylinder is misfiring then have them clear that and move to pack to another cylinder and check again. might be a good time to swap out plugs while you've got the packs out too. i'm pretty sure cylinders are numbered 1-4 starting at the timing belt. Looks like AEB packs are about $200 a set.
