IMO, it's all in your heads... until I see dyno results that show a true performance gain from one octane rating to another I really dont' think it makes a damn bit if difference what octane you're running- as long as the engine doesn't ping and your mpg doesn't suffer. With rising gas prices I'm tempted to start running 89 as I have seen no noticable difference in the way my car runs when I accidentally filled up with it in the past. Actually my mpg was better that tank full come to think about it....

 

Well I just happened to find a BP that has a 93 octane gas, normally its 91

Lower octane fuel makes your knock sensor work harder as well.

If the car required to run a certain grade fuel, determined by the manufacturer or the tune, run that grade; then there's no guesswork as to whether you're doing any damage or not. Just sayin'..

Don't forget to run out to Best Buy and get the most expensive set of Monster cables, too. They'll make your stereo sound better. Or at least you'll think they do.

This gas debate is nothing compared to the heated debates about audi/visual cables on those forums.

 

There was an article about this. They were comparing race gas against pump gas with dyno and all. I believe there was horsepower difference but it wasn't by much.

 

All the octane rating is is a measure of the gasoline's resistance to detonation (based on oxygen content.) A higher octane rating will not by itself yield additional power unless there is an accompanying increase in fuel delivery and proper tuning.

Just ask Mike what would happen to his motor if he ran 87 through it. I figure with OVER 9000 posts you know this, so maybe I missed what situation you're referencing .
