Default Rear Coil Springs

Over the last month i have been having a lot of work done on my 1998 2.8l Quattro including a new clutch, new control arms, ball joints, timing belt, valve cover gasket and lots more. After every thing was done the car was then taken to the dealer to get an alignment and the radio turned back on. I have now been told that they could not do an alignment due to both the rear coil springs being broken. I have been out of town during all of these repairs and have not seen the car so i don't know all of the details but how did the mechanic that where working on the car miss this? Has any one broken there coil springs before? And are there any symptoms that i should have picked up on while driving the car with broken springs?

Default RE: Rear Coil Springs

Yes I have a broken rear spring on mine right now. They seem to break at the bottom on the first ring just as the wire turns up. Symptoms include noise in the rear on the side thats got the broken spring. Kind of like hitting the spring with a small hammer every now and then. On bumpy roads you got more noise. I bought a complete used strut assembly and will replace mine tomorrow. Make sure you get the right springs when you replace them. There are three different spring types marked with dots on the spring itself.
