but from my experience just swapping out the cat to a hfc made a way better difference as in throttle response...so imo it was restrictive....
I swapped my old cat out and felt a huge difference. But my OE cat had a broken and clogged monolith, so my comparison isn't very accurate. I was having trouble keeping up with my Fiance's '96 Saturn SL1!

Makes sense, thanks. So my best bet for anything at all would be an hfc? Or will that not have much of an impact either?

i would personally get the hfc to be on the safe side...
just incase you ever need to be tested for emissions or something...

Well atm I dont need a new cat, my stock one is still functioning fine, I'm just looking for some gains, even small ones haha. I do have to do emissions testing once a year but if I'm not gonna gain much from a hfc, would it even be worth the money? Where can I find one anyway? to compare prices and such, does ecs have them? I know the replies to the OP suggested labree, and you said you've got one nova, where did you get it?

well you said you wanted some gains even small ones?
well this is a small gain?

just noticed right now u have the 2.8, not sure if it will work but you can give em a call and they will let you know if it will work, or Brent might even prolly make one if it dont match up?
if not you can always go with a universal Magnaflow or something?

but its up to you, you can keep the stock cat and when you feel like spending or save up 250 bucks or so you can do it..?

Thanks, I'll have to give him a call sometime to see about it fitting a 2.8 and what the expected gain might be. I'm reconsidering though cuz I just talked to one of my coworkers who has an 02 3.0 that he might be selling soon and I might buy it if he asks a reasonable price and the economy isnt completely melted by that time so I might just save my money all together for that.

It was a stock SL1. SL1's are single cam, SL2's are DOHC. Yeah, my car was slow with a clogged cat.

That's up to you. Is $500-600 in your mind best spent squeezing 10 hp from your 2.8 you'll never feel on the street, or is it better saved and spent on maintenance, iTunes, crack-cocaine, hookers, school, charity, or even a new or different car?

If you're going all out, go for it. If you've got money to burn, go for it. If you're expecting some huge gains, you'll be disappointed.
