My 99.5 Audi A4's Tiptronic has been broken since I bought the car which was a year ago. I really would like it fixed but I don't know: what are the possible problems? what parts would be needed? and how much could this cost and is it diy?

My dealership said they can fix it for 500 so how much could it cost? Can anyone help me with this and provide some information and insight as to fixing this?

someone told you it cost $500, and you ask how much it could cost? you had the answer before you asked the question.

t could be so many possible problems no one can venture a guess with the amount of info you gave. most things dealing with auto trans.'s are not DIYs. 500 is fairly cheap for a dealer to fix a transmission issue, depending on what it is exactly. i say just go get it done.

 

what did they say was broken
if there just replacing and the assembly thats attached to the shifter there - you know the black plastic peice you can just do it your self

 

It could be as cheap as $50 bucks to replace a plastic linkage or the magnetic switch. Or it could be as much as $2500-$3000 to replace the tip tranny (with a used one). Its nearly impossible to tell whats wrong with it unless they look into it.

What a dealer says is not always what a dealer ends up saying after they get elbows deep into your car.

 

Ya so true I saw a Jeep dealer do a quote for both headgaskets way under everyone else in town. The shop even called and they said that number and said it took 14 hours to do both but they quoted 200 bux or something crazy low. The customer knew better fortunately and just had our shop do it but what the dealer will say to get you in the door....

 

The dealer quoted 4k to fix the issue that caused the previous owner to sell the car to me. They said the timing belt let go, and it was going to need a new head. When I took possession of the car, removed the front of the engine, I found it to be in perfect time. Turned out to be a bad alternator. The fix was $163 at the local parts store.

Lesson is, sometimes even the dealer don't know his **** from a hole in the ground.

In any case, we need to know what the problem is before we can give a proper internet diagnosis. Tranny don't work isn't much help.
