Default Replacement Key

I recently purchased a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and it came with only the non-electronic spare key (valet key?). Just called the Audi dealership in town and it costs $180 plus an additional reprogramming fee for a new master key. Where can I get a cheap master key replacement and how can I do the reprogramming myself? Thanks.

PS: searching this forum for three letter words like 'key' or 'fob' is uh... not very productive

You have to have the dealership order the key, unfortunately. Programming it is easy though, they wanted to charge me $85 to program mine when I got it, but 45 seconds worth of work (including a google search on how to do it with my phone) and I programmed it myself. What you do is use your normal key to put the ignition switch to "on" but don't start it, then get out and lock the doors with the blade of your new key, then hold the unlock and lock buttons on the remote key at the same time for like five seconds - it should flash the lights and honk the horn, but when I did it mine didn't. I thought it didn't work, but I hit the unlock button and bam! doors unlocked. It was that simple, and yet they were going to charge me an arm and a leg to do it.

Great info! BTW, how do you replace the battery on those keys? I took the key apart and I didn't see where a battery would go.

you pull the 2 parts of the key apart (one side will be with the buttons and the other will be with the key) you take the one with the buttons and you split that in half, the battery should be right in there.

That just how you program the remote....

that wont program it to the immobilzer.. if your car is newer it will have the immobilizer!...

i believe they started the immobilizers in like.. 2000-2001 so if you have a immobilizer and your key isnt programmed to that it WILL start it then shut it off and set to safe mode. then you will need to pay even more to get it out of safe mode and then program the key... so either but a vag com or just take it to the dealer.. it sucks yes!... but what are you gonna do.

also if you have an older audi like mine a 99 there is no immobilizer just works you just have to program the remote which is what ^^^^ that is up there from what Staticclism said.

Staticclism you have a 98 so you dont have an immobilizer so ther is no programming now for "chickeneater" he has a 2001, that wont work on his car!

Whoops. I didn't even think about that, honestly - for some reason my brain was convincing me that B5s in general didn't have immobilizers. Thanks for the correction, I hope I didn't confuse anybody.

I've programmed keys on both my old 97 and my current 98.5. Just a series of locking, unlocking and pressing buttons on the remote. The cost was about 25-30 bucks for a remote off of ebay, but you need the right remote. There are different remotes for different year ranges. There's a chart some where around here.

It's either late 99 or early 2000 where A4s came with immobilizers, but can be done with a vag-com.

So in your case without a vagcom, you're probably stuck doing to the dealer.

The problem with those keys off ebay are.. you get what you pay for.. you give the vin and the part number off you old remote (if you have one)
and they send you a cut key and remote for your car.. BUT those keys are cut crappy i have never seen them work in the door lock or unlock it and i have seen cases where they dont work in the ignition either and all they are good for it the remote.

and when i order my new key i waited to get the remote.. and for some reason they sold me the remote part cheaper after i already recieved the cut copy of the key, if you order the remote as the same time as the key its like $20 bucks extra IDK WHY?!? but i guess its cause they put the key part and the remote part together for you and charge you $20 for it lmfao.
