I'm getting my 2Catalytic onverters replaced. the guy quoted me for 700. i was wondering if its a rip off or not. he said that he's going to put in a high performance one. so in southern california is this a good deal?

so you have a 2.8 v6 obviously. auditech79 says they are a pain to take out, that u have to take a lot of stuff apart to get to it. 2 cats and 4-6 hours of service, i would say thats a good deal.

auditech also mentioned that there is a way to make you o2 sensor to not have the cel on, but you'll have to search about it, i could be way off

With all due respect to you a4speed, can anyone verify it takes 4-6 hours to replace the bolted on cat on the 2.8? I honestly have no idea how long it'll take, but up to 6 hours is more than I'd imagine. Is the 2.8 really that much of a pain in the *** to work on?

Is there any reason you're getting them replaced?

no more edits!

well i did lie about one thing. he has the 3.0 v6 which has 2 cats. the 2.8 has one cat.

i use to think the same thing u did until auditech told me otherwise, they are a pain.

i love working on my 1.8, i'd shoot myself if i had to work on or pay for someone to work on a 2.8

edit: unless of course it was supercharged or had some other worthwhile mod that would make me forget the money from time to time.

true

but he has a 3.0

and the dealership charges over $2000 to replace both cats, it may even be close to $3000. i don't know what kind of cats this guy is getting, but $700 is probably around what one cat should cost.

ok, now $700 makes more sense

2 cats and maybe 2 hours of service? have you had your cats replaced sineo or know how much they cost, cuz the 3.0 is the engine that is a pain in the @ss.

No, mine were replaced before I bought the car. I think on the 3.0, it's the O2 sensors that are such a pain to replace...well, maybe the cats are too, I don't know. $700 is probably a good price for the job, but, of course, the OP could get a better idea by calling around and asking.
