Default Roof rail delete - $800!!!

Called up a good body shop today since my roof rails serve no positive purpose for me. I was told that to shave my rails would run between 800 and 1200 bucks since the entire roof would need to be painted.
I'm quite the man with the welder and I've been known to lay some paint, but am lacking the confidence to hack up my own ride. Does anyone have any input on this quote or on attemptin this myself? I want the car to look clean, not like I fucked it up. Edit - The car is brillient black so color matching shouldn't be impossible. Also, sorry for the lack of paragraphing. Playstation can't do it.

Personally, I would keep the rails, but to each his own. Post up some pics of your car so we can see what you're planning on doing to it.

You know, I feel like I read a thread not too long ago that talked about either having done that or planning to. You could probably find it or something like it by searching, but I'm too tired to look. I dozed off three times writing this reply. I recommend painting the roof, but leaving the rails on. I personally don't like the way that the A4 Avant looks sans rails.

I had searched about a month ago and found very little to help my decision. The rails make my car more difficult to clean, collect a ton of snow that is difficult to clear and becomes hazardous, and IMO go against the lines of car. I have an '01 brilliant black Avant with black rails, outer grill chrome removed, clear corners, no tint, and just ordered some mesh styled wheels for the summer. February and March wages are going to coilovers. After being in love with the VW scene for so many years, I'm real interested in smoothing the car out and setting it down, but have never dealt with professional level bodywork, and am really hoping for some helping advice or warnings, but am a huge fan of railless wagons.

I actually want some rails on my A4 sedan. Not for the look but because I ski and they would serve some sort of purpose. But that too is really expensive.

Did you see the OEM bike rack post last week? Those looked they were the perfect option if one wanted to put rails on a sedan.

It will involve alot hence the elevated price for a shop to do it. If done coreectly, they will remove the rails, then remove the entire headliner and fill the holes in the roof with steel backer plates. Then the rest of the hole will be filled and leveled with bondo, then an entire roof paint will be done. I think sans rails depends on the wagon. I like em on the A6 and will prolly keep mine (once I buy the car). I did however remove them from my Accord wagon.
