Default Running with no crankshaft/speed sensor

I was having a problem with my car stalling and having a hard time starting. Found out it was more than likely the crankshaft sensor going bad. I removed the sensor last night and ordered a new one. Should be here in a couple days. I was curious as to wether the car would start or not with no crankshaft sensor. I tried to fire it up and what do you know it starts. I was very suprised as I thought the crank sensor controlled spark. I obviously have the EPC, and check engine light on, I was wondering is the car actually driveable with no crankshaft sensor or will the car stall out and possibly not start again like it has before... Just curious thanks

if im correct, the crankshaft sensor is the one on top of the engine, like right on top of or next to the valve cover?

if so when i did my tbelt job, we forgot to plug that back in(we redid the tbelt twice cuz it was throwing a code. lol) it ran just fine tho. dont think id drive it however...

The plug for the crankshaft sensor is under the coolant resivoir by the valve cover. The actual sensor is located on the transmission by the oil filter housing. Engine is an AWM by the way.
