the 1.8 engine is many times easier to work on, cheaper to fix/upgrade, etc. you can have more power for less money. thats the reason i didnt buy an S in the first place. if you have no plans on modifying the car ever, or money is no object to you, sure go with an S4. but if money was no object you wouldnt be buying a 10 year old 100+k mile car in the first place.
Some people just buy these b5's because they like style and body on the car. Just cause you have money not every one is going to buy a newer car.

If you can find an S4 in good condition with low miles at a decent price, you might want to take a shot. Just be aware of common repairs such as the $2-3k turbo job. The 1.8t will be cheaper to maintain in the long run, will be better on gas, cheaper insurance etc.
I wouldnt be too set on a single style or model. Look for stuff in your area and go for the car that looks like the best value.

s4 are nice... ive been wanting one for a looooong time... hell even before i got into cars and such... but lately over the years ive been obsessed with wagons or as audi calls them avants... so i would love to have a b5 avant... but they are hard to find 
I've always wanted a B5 S4. Nogaro blue with the light grey leather interior. SECKS. I love the car and the motor.
That said, ghost is right. The 2.7TT is one of (if not the single) most expensive motors to work on/modify that I'm aware of. Even the simplest job requires an absurd amount of work, due to the amount of motor that Audi shoe-horned under the B5 hood. On a more basic level, think of all of the problems that you have to deal with because your 1.8T has a turbo. Turbos, waste gates, DV/BOV's, piping, inter coolers, etc. An S4 has two of all of those things. Based on that alone, your costs are going to increase. Maintenance, insurance, plus the cost of the vehicle, that becomes quite an investment.
If I had the money and a place to work on it I would absolutely buy one. Unfortunately I have neither.
