Default SEMI FIXED: Overheating after oil cooler work - oil temp high, engine hot!

Greetings everyone!

RIDE IS: Audi 1999 A4 1.8T

I have a whole bunch of questions but first ...

I have a disturbing problem with my car. In my saga of fighting the oil leak I came across the oil cooler and a oil presserue switch. The gasket behind the cooler was leaking and switch was leaking badly. I replaced them without changin oil - just the filter cause the oil was less then 500 miles old.

This fixed my leak but Now I have another a problem.

Next day, i've noticed that the oil temperature is higher then before - just about 225F. Before it never went beyond 200 mark. Water temperature was fine. I decided to take a look on it ... without shutting down the car i opened the hood. Coolant level was fine (i have added some coolant after the gasket replacement as well as oil) but something was going on inside the coolant tank - somethin i've never seen before - like there is an air coming through the upper hose in it - some **play** but most likely its just a coolant constanly getting into the tank through the upper hose.

I got back in to the car and noticed that the water temperature is one notch higher then normally. I kept going and the water temperature went back to normall. I got back home and while i was driving oil temperature went very close to 250F. Water was fine. When i parked i've noticed that the water temp started climbing again. I opened the hood and it was HOT! Same **action** in expansion tank.

Now I am unsure what to do ... this never happened before and I couldn't find describtion of that behaviour...

My bets ...
1. I have overt the nut on oil filter housing ... is it even possible?
2. There is air in cooling system (i have replaced coolant flange the day before). How do I get rid of it on this car? And even if there is an air why the hell oil goes up?
3. Thermostat issue? It was replaced five months ago ... besides the water temp seems to be fine ...
4. My second fan IS NOT working unless AC or Heater is on and the Heater is working fine. Is this a correct behaviour?
5. Too much oil in the engine. This is possible - there is no any marks on my dipstick at all (min max) - i put 4.5 bottles when I change oil and after the oil cooler thing i've added one full bottle. Could this cause that sort of result?

6. WHAT SHOULD I DO????????????????????????? THANK YOU

#1 Some blockage around the adaptor or reduction of the oil flow could cause high oil temps.

Check on that oil 'pressure' sensor, maybe it was a temp sensor? I'm not sure where they are located on the 1.8T. Disconnect the connector and see what you get on the dash with the engine running.

#2 & 3:
Water temps will climb a notch or two when you are parked. This is normal.

You may want to search for coolant and air to find answers on bubbles in the overflow. This can also be caused by head gasket problems, but hope that's not it on your car. Thermostat

#4 Secondary fan runs only with AC compressor on or high coolant temp, so that is correct.

#5 The dipstick should have a hatch marked area surrounded by plastic. The oil level needs to be within the plastic collars in the marked area. Car level, engine off at least 5 minutes to allow drain down.

good luck!

Forgot to mention re:#1, the gasket if not correct or cutouts are not lined up could bypass the oil cooler also resulting in high OT.

Just another thought, if the oil temp is truly elevated, the coolant tank issues are probably just a result of that.

Thanks.,

the temp sensor is on the bottom of a pan. the one I had replaced is for sure a pressure sensor. i've disconected it and the red oil sign started flashing on cluster along with beeping... and I've never seen water temp go over middle mark even in miami beach in hour and a half traffice and it was hot !!!

About the gasket it is interesting. IMHO the only purpose of it is to prevent oil leak between housing and oil cooler. Basically i fitted the slots on gasket into whatever no it fitted to (basically any) ...

And it seems like I have too much oil - although there is no ANY marks on a stick - ill get new stick on monday - the one I have is not from audi ...

Thank you,

Use a straw...?

No. really, you can pull the filter, but it'll make a mess any way you try. If the oil is dark, just change it.

Glad to share what I know AgZ.

Ok, so the sensor is pressure. How many miles do you have on the oil? Miles since last change darken the oil but then so would higher than usual oil temperature.

An oil overfill can cause the oil temp to rise depending on engine and amount of overfill. The effect is mostly due to flow dynamics or reservoir height issues.

Some shops use a suction pump hooked to the dipstick tube to drain oil. Might be good to know the true level before draining anything tho......I would measure the length of my cars dipstick but its a 2.8. If you had a measurement from where the cap meets the tube to the marks on a similar engine........

I have about 500 miles on oil. May be slightly more ... and I called the guy who did oil change (i was too lazy ...) and he says he out 5q in it, instead of 4.5 as i used to do before so maybe it was overfilled to begin with and then I added full qt after gasket change so it is possible (depending on the capacity of a filter) that there is extra qt sitting there.

Ill just do an oil change right away. Another $30 but illl feel better ... and external oil coller is a good mod also;

Thank you guys for help

Well, i've drained the oil and it seems like 5.5 qt + another 0.5 i spilled was sitting there. about 6 qt. way over system capacity. Should've watch the oil level more carefully ... Thanks everyone for help.
