Default Service oil message

I have a '99 1.8t and was hoping someone knows how to reset the service oil message that appears in the trip miles area. It always appears when I start the car but will go back to the miles after a few minutes, or if I press the trip reset button. Pressing the reset buttonis not a permanent fix unless there is some kind of sequence to use.

Also what causes the message to appear? Low oil level? Sensor that collects metal particals? My lastoil change was about 2500mi ago. The level is still good and it still looks and feels clean, it isjust starting to turn a darker brown.Im currently using a 0-30w senthetic if that makes a difference. Outside temp has been around 5deg F the pastweek.Oil and water temp gages are still normal while running.

I think you need a VAG-COM to reset it.

You can in some cases push and hold the reset button then turn on ignition key to on position. If not,, take it to a dealer that has the vag tools.

The reason it is on is, milage or time triggers it. Has NOTHING to do with oil quality.

If it's pre 1998 you will need a vag tool to reset it. If it's a 1998-1999 read this:

Note: This procedure has been confirmed on '98 and '99 model year A4's.

Thanks all for the help. I finally got my service manual and according to that Horch is very close. My model steps 1-3 are the same but I just need to pull the light dimmer/clock set button for 2 seconds and the fault goes away. Finally that one worked. I did find out a coworker had a Jetta and a vag-com that they are willing to part with so that will be very useful in the future im sure. Thanks again.
