Lightbulb Sheer lunacy?

I've wanted a TDI quattro A4 for a while now....after reading up on a few Euro-TDI engine swaps people have done I decided it was viable (albeit expensive and time consuming) and worth it. Fast forward to yesterday: I find a wrecked '04 VW Touareg V10 TDI. The SUV is totaled, although the engine/transmission are still in good shape. Given the tranny is an Auto, but I don't know that I'd be able to find a manual transmission that could bolt up to the V10 TDI that would be able to handle the torque. The salvage yard still wants an arm and a leg just for the complete drivetrain, and I know it's going to cost a medium-sized fortune to even attempt, but good lord am I tempted........The suspension / drivetrain / body modifications required are going to be otherworldly, but still; I want the world's first V10 TDI B5 A4 quattro.

Still not convinced I should pull the trigger on a project of this magnitude right now, but it's quite the idea. Thoughts?

They've sold the V10 Touareg in the states for a while now, but they're pretty hard to come by - they're around $90k new. The drivetrain has 108k miles on it and they want $10k. I can't even come close to affording that right now but it's nice to dream. Fitment would definitely be the biggest obstacle - and again I'd need to put a hell of a lot more thought and research into it than just two nights of dreaming, but if it were somehow even a small bit feasible.....yikes.

v10 tdi would be awesome but I don't think it'd be easy at all to fit.. I think the easiest/cheapest way to go tdi would be to take one from a b5 passat

Or you could get a 1.9 deisel block and bore it to 2.2 and run it as a BAT gas motor.

I was thinking about the 1.9 swap - a friend of mine had an insanely built Jetta TDI which was sweet - problem there is that the Jettas are transverse-mounted engines and Audi quattros are longitudinally mounted, so I guess I just automatically assumed it wouldn't work. Tourbo24, I considered just importing a TDI Audi from Europe but with US emissions and EPA regulations it's so difficult to import an entire vehicle that it's nigh on impossible; best case scenario I'd LOOOVE to get my hands on a 3.0TDI quattro 6-speed A5. I'm actually going to start looking for wrecked European TDI A4s today just to get a ballpark as to what kind of money I'm going to end up spending in the long run if I do decide to do a TDI swap.....although I already get the impression that picking up a B6 or B7 S4 would be the more (initially anyway) economically viable purchase.
