Soooo im thinking about buying a b5
So im looking into buying this b5... i saw it today and a few things stuck out to me.
First, when you cut the wheel abruptly or come to the end of the steering wheel rotation - the RPMs drop down and it feels like the engine wants to stall a little bit. Although the car did not stall out it seemed somewhat odd.
Second, there was a check engine light on and he told me that the 'coils' with the sparkplugs need to be replaced. Im not completely in the dark when it comes to automotive intelligence but im not exactly sure what this means. He said it would run me about 300 bucks to fix.
The engine sounded strong but it did make a noise that i wasnt too sure of. It didnt sound terrible like it was about to explode or anything, the only way i can describe it is like one of those 1.slow VW Jetta's at around 150k miles, a faint clicking sound.
The car has about 83k miles on and the TB has been replaced along with the water pump so maybe the this sound can be chalked up to the fresh belt?
just trying to find some input, and i appreciate any comments or suggestions. I think i may buy because the price is soooo right.
oh - Its a 1998 2.8 quattro ~83k miles

hmmm well ive driven a b5 before and i know that the check engine light can go off for something as lame as a gascap. Plus the seller said his mechanic told him the VAG com said it was the coil or whatever.
i know there is probably an epic thread somewhere about turbo VS 6cyl but id rather take the 6 - i dont plan on really modding the engine to much, besides a turbo on a 12 year old car? you really think it could give it that much juice?
how about the RPM drop when cutting the wheel?

When you hit either end on power steering, the engine is stressed more by the pump. The misfire could be way less than 300 dollars or way more, depending on the cause. And get the 6 cylinder cuz your right, my 11 year old turbo B5 has no juice
well - though i do greatly appreciate your input - im not sure if you are being sarcastic or not lololol. I was not disrespecting the turbojunkies of the VW universe, though i have been looking to buy another b5 for a little bit now and it seems that most b5s for sale are listed under 'NEEDS A TURBO!'
I would take a turbo - but rocking a 12 year old 4banger with a turbo over a v6 seems impractical to me, although like i said before im not really a mechanic.
I have been researching and apparently there was a ignition coil recall? and its not a tough fix? this true? The seller knew what he was talking about and didnt seem too much like a used car salesmen, just a fellow VW/Audi lover that wants his baby to have a new, decent, and respectable home.

What sucks about the 2.8? Reliability? Seems like a pro more then a con. Keep in mind not everyone wants to mod their engine.
hahahah - I'm gonna talk to my uber mechanic tomorrow and see what he thinks about it.
I think ima buy it - I appreciate your input.
Also!!! the seller works at a stoneyard and had a unfortunate accident ( a marble slab fell on him) and managed to smash the click key part of the key ( the key is fine)
any idea on how and how much to replace on of these suckers? The actual key is fine but the plastic housing and electronic part is allll sorts of smashed up

They're supposedly reliable, but they're slooooow.

or make him fix it
