Speaker Question
Ive got a 2000 A4 and my front right speaker is blown. I was wondering what size speaker it is and were can i get one. Also how hard is it to install. Any help would be great and links.
It's an odd one to replace. It's a 4" speaker with 3 screw holes. When I replaced the front door speakers in mine, I made templates that adapted up to a 5.25" speaker.
Your other problem is that the OEM speakers are 2ohm. Pretty much any aftermarket speaker is 4ohm and will result in playing a bit quieter than the other speakers in the car once installed.
As for the installation, it's not too tricky. Just remove the 4 or so screws that hold the door panel on (remove a screw under the pull handle/arm rest and slide out the plastic ring that hides 2 more screws, then there's another small screw on both the upper inside and outside edges of the door panel). Once those are out, pull up on the door panel and it will slide off. Unhook the door handle from the cable, and see if you can get away with unplugging just the plugs that are near the speaker. On the driver's side panel there are 4 window switches harnesses that are NOT marked, so if you unplug all of them, you'll have to remember which color harness went where.
The speaker carriers are attached to the door panels with little red torx screws. Once removed you'll see the funky little 4" beasts in all their non-weather-resistant glory. I have replaced them with standard 4" speakers in a couple of cars, but it involved trimming the speakers up a bit to get them to sit in the carriers correctly.

yes defiantly make an adapter for them unless you get OEM speakers. I made an adapter and replaced with 5.25" just like defaz said, i find them to sound much better than the 4". Ive noticed that even when you replace with another 4" the original housing is a bit small and will push on the rubber suspension of the speaker which will affect the lows mostly. So definitely construct an adapter rather than drilling new screw holes. if your not planning on replacing all the speakers than the difference in volume can be pretty significant like defaz said but you can always adjust that with your radio controls.
