Default Speedo won't work + CEL

I searched and couldn't find anything about this.
Car is a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro.

I was driving around in my car when I noticed that as I hit the gas, the speedo needle would jump all over the place and sometimes not work at all. About 10 minutes into the drive my check engine light came on. The car still drove fine, though.

I assume the problems are related. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The first thing to do iS get the code read. Also you could try taking the speedo off and seeing if it's a loose connection but I highly doubt that... But if it is then that's an easy fix. Just take the plastic piece above the steering wheel off and unscrew the 2 screws and wiggle it out from the bottom first. Also just look at it cuz it could be obvious what it is.

Okay thanks I'll take a look at that. Would that cause the CEL to come on?

I checked the connection and it seems to be okay. Any ideas what else it could be?

I really just want to know if it sounds like it could possibly be a serious issue and if I should drive it or not with the check engine light still on. I plan to bring it in to my mechanic asap, but I still need to drive it. :/

If the only problem you are experiencing is the needle and CEL, it should be fine to drive. The next step is to drive it to a mechanic or scan for codes.

Just an update for anyone who may come across this thread in a search.

So the car did have a bad sensor, which is being replaced this week. That's about it.
My mechanic did warn me that is still could possibly just be a bad instrument cluster all together. And those ***** are expensive...

You should be able to connect to the cluster with VAG COM to check it out. Speed sensor in the rear diff?
