Stopping brakes from squeaking

My brakes squeak like crazy when I come to a stop sign. I checked the pads and they're all about half worn. Does anyone have any tricks to stop the squeaking?

Take the pads off, and slather some of this stuff on the surfaces that contact the caliper.

I was hoping to not have to buy anything but from research it seems like the only thing that works, thanks.
