Default Swap an S4 transmission

My tranny is making a winding noise in 1st and I've read of others who have the same issue. Appears to be a known problem with 2001 B5's.

Is it possible to slap an S4 tranny in without any mods? It would be cool to have a 6th gear

I should have mentioned I have a 2001 2.8 manual. I wanted to know if I could drop in an S4 6spd manual? Would it just bolt in or does it require mods?

Why do you think it's pointless?

The 2.8 manual tranny has a known issue with the 1st gear busting teeth off and making obnoxious noise when in gear. I have this issue.

I'm not aware of the S4 tranny having the same issue. I may be wrong?

If it doesn't have the issue, I would rather replace mine with one that will never have this issue again.

Not to mention, I would love to get a 6th gear, right?

Thoughts...

No it is not just a bolt in mod. You will need just about all of the S4 drivetrain including the rear diff since it has a 4.11 vs the 3.89 in the A4 1.8t/2.8 01A transmission.

exactly as mike says. it not a direct bolt on. 6th gear wouldn't be so fun on the highway i don't think. nor would it be fun doing 30mph in 6th. it is cool to have but you won't use it often i don't think

That transmission is really best on the car it came with which has plenty of tq down low. The problem is the 01E 6 speed has a very tall 2nd gear which means you end up really low in the rpms coming out of 1st.

It looks like my best best (to resolve the tranny issues I have), is to get a rebuild. I've searched high and low for rebuilds but only come up with dealership remanufactured for $4500 bucks. Not going there.
Is anyone aware of other options? Other than just purchasing a "low miles" used tranny in.
