TBA Error
only seen a few dead threads about this on here, and cant find a solution anywhere else, but anyway when I do my throttle body alignment at the final stage of switching to basic setting or whatever I get a big stupid ERROR and it never completes also there is zero sound coming from the TB. What the hell?

using the control module through VAGCOM.
Ex: Procedure for performing a Throttle Body Alignment on DBW Cars using KWP-1281:
(Check to see if the engine speaks KWP-1281 by looking in the top left of the Open Controller Screen Some examples of KWP-1281 engine controllers are 2000+ Golf/GTI/Jetta/New Beetle/Audit TT 1.8T)
Turn the key on but do not start the car.
[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 060
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]
Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.
[Switch to Meas. Blocks] button and you're all set.
Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!
leaving the ignition switch to on (just electrical) does nothing for about 5 min. Still my code is there and no hope of clearing.

You're most likely right. How effective is cleaning the TB and would or could it even make a difference? I assume not because of all the crazy mechanics in our TBs if a spring is bad I would assume the whole thing needs to be replaced and cleaning would not change the fact that it cant align?
Ehhh i wouldnt worry about it. Mine did that too, and it would throw a bunch of different codes after a little while along with the one you have. Idk what the deal is but mine will adapt just fine if i use the key method. After clearing the codes, it left that one remaing error code that u have for a while and i couldnt clear it but it eventually reset itself. Someone said if you adapt with the key a bunch of times in a row it will clear.
It seems theres a couple of people that have this issue, I had always wondered if it had something to do with me owning a 99 just before the 99.5 like there is something conflicting when you run it through vagcom? It looks like you have a 99 too so that makes me think even more 99 might just be a weird year where TBA's are supposed to only be done with the key.
But if it adapts fine with the key method, and your resolve whatever problem you had that made you try and do a vag adapt in the first place, i wouldnt worry about buying a new TB just yet, new ones arent cheap. I think if there was something really wrong with the TB it would throw a code by itself. That code didnt throw a CEL for me either, just the code, so that was nice. But maybe having that code will bother you too much so that you buy a new one n eway, haha i know it bugged me.

i do have pre 99 so that might be just a common issue with them. anyway The code alone bugs the crap out of me, but more importantly my car has been in i guess "limp mode" on account of it will only boost like 4 psi when I floor it, it has been like this for a long time now and I have done countless things to try and diagnose this problem. I pulled the chipped ECU out awhile ago and never did the TBA when I put it back in, so I know a lot of people get this code but just maybe my TAP ECU reads the code as urgent and throws the car into limp?
I don't really know as of now, but before I buy the $350 part which should never go out I want to try this http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3701326 its on the 1.8T engine

I opened up the throttle body yesterday to see if that article above was helpful but with no success. the problem seemed to be that the tiny alignment foot which drives along a chip like a record player couldn't or wouldn't read data anymore. so the solution? ordered new throttle body from ECS
