Timing Belt
I have a 2001 Audi A4 V6 and the timing belt went off. I need to know if there is a high probability that it bent some valves. If it did, is it better to replace the whole engine or just fix the one I have. Thanks for the help...
not to sure about the v6, but in my 1.8 when the belt snapped it bent and even broke some valves. the broken valves damaged the cylinder head badly, which is the only reason i replaced the whole motor. if there isnt damage to the cylinders or block itself, you should just swap the head. the full motor swap was one of the biggest PITA things i have ever done on a car. the swap was easy, but it came w/ a ton of headaches after. and now 6 months later i just got it running perfect again.
If it was running you bent valves. Depending on the conditions you could also be looking at a couple pistons w/ a cracked lip or something too. Our shop recently had to rebuild a 3.0 in an A6 and it ended up like 5k I think because we had to replace 2 pistons, rebuild both heads as a precaution (i think), and all the little things that have to be done while you do that. However the 3.0 engine costs a bit more then a 2.8 im sure. The only way to know what kind of damage is done is to remove the heads and inspect. If the valves look alright take the heads to a machine shop and have them tested.
