timing belt installation
Ok new member and new audi owner, but old tech with 20 years turning wrenches. I picked up an a4 that was traded in at the dealership. I am going to be ripping into this thing probaly next week. From what i can see the bumper and rad support need to come out, the tbelt covers , replace the water pump, bearings, crank seal, tensioner, tbelt, and thermostate. Am I missing anything? I guess there is a tool to hold the cams in place too, i remeber doing a gti and the cams kept rolling made it hard to install the belt. where do you guys get the tool? the snapon guy wants 250 bucks for it, I am sure there are cheaper ones that do the same thing. If any of you have any tips to share i would love to hear them.
at the same time i replace the belt gonna do the coolant flange too, looks like its common thing and its dripping.

Because you're asking about a tool, I'm assuming it's a 2.8 or 3.0 (thanks for specifying engine when you're looking for help). ECS tuning might carry a tool for that, or you could make your own, if you are handy. A tool is not necessary, but will help. It can be done without a tool on the 2.8. I've done 1.8T engine timing belt before, so any more questions on the 1.8T, feel free to ask. Coolant flange dripping?
Haven't seen that too much, but check and replace all O-Rings by fan switch and coolant temp sensor. They go bad around 150K+ miles sometimes and can leak.

sorry should have put in the post its a 1.8t. I remeber doing gti timing belt and somoene telling me there was a tool for the cams or tensioner i cant remeber.
coolant flange is the part on the back of the cyl head, looks like its plastic. I may be calling it the wrong thing, most of my experiance is on lexus or toyota. I have mitchell on demand at work but on these cars its about useless, its good for domestics and jap stuff but not a lot of information on vw/audi.

Someone sent me a link to this Audi Repair DVD for $100. Maybe this or a Bentley book might be useful to you.
