Thumbs down Timing issues? Retarted timing?

So I changed my water pump ver the last couple days an finally got everything back together an it started up fine but It runns sluggish.. I had to take the oil pulley/gear off to get to the 10mm bolts that hold the water pump in place.. So this means the timing belt came off too.. While the belt was off no gear moved.. I asked one of the local euro shops an the guy said that when I put it back together that I may have retarted the timing by a tooth/degree.. I don't think this is possible but tomaro I'm going to rip it all apart again an mark everything to see if the timing is off.. Any suggestions or advise would be appreciated..

did you mark your cam gear and crank befor you removed the belt? that would have prevented this situation if you didnt

Correction, the crank moves farely easily. You can move it with you're bare hands, the cam is a lot harder. But in tightening the timing belt tensioner you can move the crank pulley. You have to take off the valve cover to check cam timing, the crank will have a notch on the pulley and on the back cover. Align those and align the notch on the cam and head and you are in good shape.

You have to make sure that the #1 cylinder is in fact at TDC when you line up everything.

What's the best way to determine if cylinder 1 is tdc?

Assuming the notch indicates that?

TDC only happens on 1 of the 4 rotations of the crank, this is the point where the piston is at the top with all the valves shut.

yea make sure its TDC intake and not exhaust, best way to do that is get number 1 cylinder at tdc and find its companion cylinder one should be on intake stroke and the other should be on exhaust stroke... the companion cylinder on exhaust stroke will have some overlap so finding the TDC should be fairly simple once u figure this out

hope that helped
