Default trouble with code reader connecting to car

I bought a 98 Audi about a week ago and I have been trying to get the code pulled but every time I use the code reader it says it is unable to connect and tells me to make sure the cars ignition is on. Any help with this? I have no idea where to even begin with this

I just got a Top Tack OBD II scanner from ebay and it works fine. That's strange why it wouldn't work. Are you sure the pins are in all the way? It can be a pia to line it up right sometimes.

a4nick, check your radio and/or cigarette lighter fuses. I think one of those control the OBD2 port. Let us know how it turns out. They are located underneath a door inside next to the steering wheel by the driver's door.

Yah i have the original head unit in there still and ill check my fuses but both my radio and cig. lighter work right now so idk if that will be the problem i plug it in and it feels like it goes in like butter which was wierd to me. my 96 there was a little resistance and it actually felt like a plug on my 98 it feels like nothin really.
